Elton John went to a “higher place” after smoking marijuana during a creative music session.
The 73-year-old Tiny Dancer star opened up on the incident during his Apple Music series Rocket Hour, explaining he tripped out after smoking the drug while listening to electronic dance music.
According to the hitmaker, the combination of the weed in his system and the music beats running through his mind left the singer in a state of bliss, which resulted in him seeing God before his eyes.
Crediting Kraftwerk’s dance album Trans-Europe Express for really heightening the trip, Elton shared: “I love that because it was the first record I ever heard that really sounded German as far as pop music went.
“I remember smoking a joint and listening to it on really loud speakers and I thought I saw God during that album.”
While the Rocket Man star is now sober, he’s spoken candidly in the past about his drug and alcohol-fuelled years, and previously told Entertainment Tonight that his two celebrated Dodger Stadium concerts in Los Angeles in 1975 “saved his life”, and made him realize his substance abuse was out of control.
“Two days before Dodger Stadium (shows), I was having my stomach pumped,” the star recalled. “I took an overdose and there I was, two days later, at Dodger Stadium with Cary Grant and Billie Jean King having the time of my life.
“That’s what you do (when) you’re a performer and that’s what saved my life – being a performer.”
